Mayor Bloomberg calls for end to teacher seniority rules

New York City Mayor Bloomberg:.
"If the governor’s budget contains education cuts, it must also contain changes to the law so that we can take merit into account when making these difficult decisions.”...
"And yet Albany rules say that when it comes to teaching, talent doesn’t matter, results don’t matter."

  1. I generally like Bloomberg's ideas, but I am not big on this one. It will lead to serious age discrimination, of the sort that already afflicts the high tech world. One of the reasons American kids don't go into computing is the sense that careers only last 10 to 15 years. Do we want the same thing to happen to teaching? I tend to be against anything that will make it harder to attract good people into teaching, because that is where the educational crisis lies.

  2. I wonder why age discrimination is a particularly serious problem in the high tech world. Would changing to a "seniority rules" system eliminate the problem?

Even with the risk of potential age discrimination, I don't think I'd want to work in a LIFO environment. But I can see how others might want to.
